Suffolk County Police Department and Sheriff

Suffolk County has two main law enforcement agencies. The Suffolk County Police Department serves most of the county and is a separate agency from the Sheriff. The Central Records Section for SCPD is at 30 Yaphank Avenue in Yaphank. Phone: 631-852-6015. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 3:45 PM. All report requests may be completed and dropped off at the business counter. Requests are not accepted by phone.

The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office at 100 Center Drive in Riverhead handles law enforcement for unincorporated areas, runs the county jail, and handles civil process. Phone: (631) 852-2200. The Sheriff's Records Division processes FOIL requests for Sheriff's Office incident reports. Records requests must comply with NYS Public Officers Law Section 66-a. FOIL Requests for Suffolk County Police Blotter

All Suffolk County law enforcement agencies follow New York's Freedom of Information Law at Public Officers Law Section 87. Each agency must designate a Records Access Officer. Suffolk County agencies are required by law to publish the name and contact information of their Records Access Officers. All denials must be in writing with a specific statutory citation.

The standard fee is 25 cents per page for paper copies. Electronic records sent by email cost nothing extra. Suffolk County accepts FOIL appeals within 30 days of a denial.
